With a limited edition of Richard Lange "Pour le Mérite", which is limited to 218 copies, A. Lange & Söhne presents an uncompromising precision timepiece. The new version was presented for the first time in white gold with a black dial during an international dealership held in Dresden on September 22, 2016. Its chain-worm drive ensures a constant torque and maximum accuracy.
Since the introduction of the first collection of the modern era in autumn 1994, the exclusive timepieces with the addition of the name "Pour le Mérite" represent the technological avant-garde of A. Lange & Söhne. Each of the four models so far has been equipped with a chain-worm mechanism. Richard Lange's "Pour le Mérite", presented for the first time in 2009, demonstrates the high precision requirements in its purest form. The only task of their complication to be recognized only on the shop floor is to improve the gait accuracy. The present versions in red gold and platinum are now supplemented by a limited white gold edition with black dial.
Highest technical effort
The outstanding technical feature of Richard Lange "Pour le Mérite" - and all "Pour le Mérite" models since 1994 - is a chain-worm drive that has set new standards in precision watchmaking. The mechanism, inspired by historical pocket watches and realized for the first time by A. Lange & Söhne in a wristwatch, guarantees a constant torque and therefore a constant amplitude of the balance over the entire duration. By winding the chain on the spring housing, the chain transmits its drive force to the gear train via a cone - the screw - and thus ensures a constant torque. In the case of a full pull, the chain pulls on the smaller circumference of the screw, ie on the shorter lever; With a low lift and a decreasing traction force, on the other hand, on the larger circumference of the screw and thus on the longer lever.
The drive via the chain and worm has the result that the screw rotates in one direction when it is pulled into the opposite direction. Therefore, a construction is required which ensures that the drive of the watch is not interrupted even during the mounting. An elaborate planetary gear ensures that the transmission of the screw from the worm to the movement is maintained during the winding process. It consists of 38 tiny items, which the watchmaker must accommodate in the 8.6 millimeters narrow inside diameter of the worm.
Perfection to the last detail
In the interior of the manufactory calibrator L044.1, manufactured according to the highest quality criteria and elaborately decorated by hand, a free-swinging long spiral brings the large screw balance to 21,600 half-vibrations per hour. Its moment of inertia can be precisely adjusted to the driving torque of the screw using four regulating screws made of solid gold. The elaborate finishing of all parts of the workpieces extends to the top edge of the chain made in the manufactory. Crafted masterpieces such as the engravings on unrest, as well as the wheel and the wheel of the wheel, raise every one of the 218 specimens to the rank of a unique work of art. The print-on height has a special significance: 218 is the current number of the world-wide sales outlets in which the timepieces are available from A. Lange & Söhne.
